Track down water leaks in service lines, courtyards, and paved areas before they undermine a driveway or waste thousands of litres. The HIKMICRO AD22P-O pairs a 7″ touchscreen analyser with a dedicated ground-contact outdoor sensor and listening sticks, tuned to the low-frequency sound of water escaping underground. Purpose-built for property-side leak detection outside the building envelope, where guessing means digging in the wrong spot.

Underground leaks don’t announce themselves — until the water bill does

A leak in an outdoor service line rarely shows itself the way an indoor drip does. There’s no ceiling stain, no puddle under the sink — just water quietly disappearing into the ground under a driveway, a courtyard, or a stretch of buried pipe between the meter and the building. Often the first sign is a water bill that doesn’t add up, a damp patch appearing in an otherwise dry garden bed, or a section of paving that’s started to subside. By the time any of that is visible, the leak has usually been running for a while, and the water authority or property owner wants an answer fast: where, exactly, do we dig?

Digging blind is expensive and disruptive. Break up the wrong section of concrete, trench through the wrong garden bed, and you’ve added a repair bill on top of the leak itself — plus a client who’s now watching every move you make on the rest of the job. For contractors working property-side leak detection, plumbing companies fielding high water bill call-outs, or civil teams investigating service line loss, pinpoint accuracy before the shovel comes out isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s the entire value proposition.

Purpose-built for ground contact, not adapted from an indoor tool

The HIKMICRO AD22P-O pairs the AD22P main unit with an outdoor sensor engineered specifically for ground-contact use — a meaningfully different job to picking up sound through a plasterboard wall. Water escaping under pressure from a buried pipe generates low-frequency sound that travels through soil, paving, and pipe material before it reaches the surface, and the AD22P-O’s outdoor sensor and Outdoor Mode band-pass filter (200–2,000 Hz) are tuned to that lower frequency range specifically, rather than trying to stretch an indoor-tuned sensor to cover a job it wasn’t built for.

The kit also includes listening sticks — a more traditional, direct-contact method of picking up sound from valves, hydrants, and exposed pipe sections, useful for narrowing down a search area before committing to ground-sensor placement, or for jobs where a quick manual check is faster than setting up the full acoustic survey. Having both tools in one kit means you’re not carrying separate equipment for different stages of the same investigation.

Like the rest of the AD22P range, the AD22P-O auto-recognises which sensor is connected, so switching between the outdoor ground sensor and listening sticks on site doesn’t require digging through a menu — attach the sensor and the unit configures itself accordingly.

From general area to exact point

Outdoor leak jobs typically move through a broader search before narrowing down, and the AD22P-O’s two inspection modes reflect that. Quick Inspection Mode is built for walking a suspected stretch of pipe run or paved area and comparing relative sound levels at a series of points to rule areas in or out fast — useful when you’re trying to establish which side of a property boundary a leak sits on, or which section of a long service run is affected. Route Inspection Mode supports a more structured, multi-point walkthrough for longer runs or larger properties, building a clearer sound-intensity picture across the whole suspected area before committing to a dig point.

That locate → localise → pinpoint workflow matters more outdoors than almost anywhere else, because the cost of being wrong is measured in metres of unnecessary excavation, not just a patch-and-repaint job.

Custom Mode for the leaks that don’t play by the rules

Not every outdoor leak sits neatly in the 200–2,000 Hz Outdoor Mode band — pipe material, burial depth, soil type, and pressure all shift the acoustic signature. The AD22P-O’s Custom Mode lets you adjust anywhere across the instrument’s full 200–16,000 Hz range, so if a job’s producing a signal outside the standard outdoor preset, you’re not stuck guessing — you can tune the filter to match what you’re actually hearing.

What’s in the outdoor kit, specifically

The AD22P-O is built around outdoor property-side work: the AD22P main unit and its 7″ touchscreen, the dedicated ground-contact outdoor sensor, listening sticks for direct-contact checks, a headset for clear monitoring in noisy outdoor conditions (traffic, wind, nearby equipment), and a hard carry case to keep the kit protected between sites. It doesn’t include the high-sensitivity indoor sensor that ships with the AD22P-I — if your work also takes you inside the building envelope regularly, the combined AD22P-I/O kit covers both scenarios with a single device rather than requiring two separate kits.

Rated to work a full day outdoors

Field jobs run long, and the AD22P-O carries the same 11-hour continuous battery life and 4-hour recharge as the rest of the AD22P range, so a full day of property surveys or a multi-site route doesn’t mean carrying a spare battery or hunting for a power point. Audio and image data are stored on-device — audio in .wav format for review on PC, images in .jpeg for documentation — with USB 2.0 (USB Type-C) connectivity for transferring findings back to the office for reporting or client sign-off.

Who this kit is built for

Plumbing and leak detection contractors responding to unexplained high water bills on residential or commercial properties. Water utility field teams and contractors investigating service line loss between the meter and the property boundary. Civil and irrigation contractors tracking leaks in buried supply lines across larger sites. Facility and grounds maintenance teams responsible for outdoor infrastructure at commercial or institutional properties, where an undetected leak can undermine paving, erode garden beds, or waste significant volumes of water over time.

What is the HIKMICRO AD22P-O used for? The AD22P-O is an acoustic leak detector configured for outdoor, property-side water leak detection — locating leaks in buried service lines, under paving, and across courtyards or garden areas outside the building envelope.

Why does the AD22P-O use a different sensor to the indoor AD22P-I? Underground leak sound travels differently to indoor leak sound — it’s typically lower frequency and needs to be picked up through ground contact rather than through a wall or floor, which is why the AD22P-O ships with a dedicated outdoor sensor rated IP66 and an Outdoor Mode filter tuned to 200–2,000 Hz.

What’s included in the AD22P-O kit that isn’t in the AD22P-I kit? The AD22P-O includes the outdoor ground-contact sensor and listening sticks, in place of the AD22P-I’s indoor sensor. Technicians who need both are better served by the combined AD22P-I/O kit.

Can the AD22P-O be used to trace leaks in buried water service lines? Yes — that’s the core use case for this configuration, using the outdoor sensor’s ground-contact detection alongside listening sticks for exposed valves and pipe sections.

How rugged is the AD22P-O outdoor sensor? The outdoor sensor carries an IP66 rating, providing dust-tight and high-pressure water jet protection suited to ground contact and outdoor field conditions.

How long does the AD22P-O run before needing a recharge? Up to 11 hours of continuous operation from its rechargeable Li-ion battery, with a 4-hour recharge time.

What are listening sticks used for on the AD22P-O? Listening sticks provide a direct-contact way to pick up sound from valves, hydrants, and exposed pipework, useful for narrowing a search area quickly before or alongside a full ground-sensor survey.
