Your Multimeter Can’t See the Small Stuff. The AA15 Can.
You’ve got a fault that only shows up as a few milliamps. Maybe it’s a leaky circuit that keeps tripping an RCD, a control panel that never quite switches off, or a battery drain nobody can find. Your standard clamp meter reads 0.00 and shrugs. Breaking the circuit to put a meter in series isn’t always practical, and it isn’t always safe.
That’s the gap the PROVA AA15 AC/DC mA current probe fills. It clamps around the conductor, so there’s no need to open the circuit. It converts current into a small voltage signal your existing digital multimeter or oscilloscope can read. You get milliamp-level resolution without buying a whole new meter.
What Is the PROVA AA15?
The AA15 is a compact AC/DC current probe from PROVA Instruments. It measures 0–30A AC or DC through a 25mm jaw, with resolution down to 0.1mA on AC and 1mA on DC. A single rotary switch selects the range. A one-touch zero button nulls the DC offset before you measure.
It’s an accessory, not a standalone meter. The probe outputs a voltage proportional to the current, and your DMM or scope does the displaying. If you already own a decent multimeter, the AA15 turns it into a low-current clamp tester.
Where the AA15 Earns Its Place
Electrical contractors and maintenance teams Chase leakage and standby currents without disconnecting a thing. Clamp a single conductor and read the small AC current flowing through it on a 0–400mA range with 0.1mA sensitivity. Handy for fault-finding on circuits where a full-size clamp meter simply isn’t sensitive enough.
Solar installers and battery system techs Check DC current on low-voltage DC wiring, battery leads and charge circuits using the DC 0–4A and 0–30A ranges. Always check the circuit voltage against the probe’s CAT rating before you clamp on.
Calibration and test technicians The probe’s mV output makes it easy to log current with an oscilloscope or a data-logging DMM. It’s a practical way to watch current over time, such as inrush, load cycling or slow drift.
Trainers and RTOs A hands-on way to show students how current probes, mV scaling and DC zeroing actually work. The single rotary switch keeps it simple for first-timers.
Features That Matter on the Job
- 0–30A AC/DC measurement across clearly defined ranges, so you pick the one that suits the load.
- High resolution: 0.1mA AC and 1mA DC. This is the headline benefit for leakage and small-load work.
- 25mm jaw accommodates conductors up to approx. 25mm.
- One-touch zero for DCA. Press, null the offset, and start measuring. No fiddling with trim pots.
- Connects to a DMM or oscilloscope via a voltage output, so it slots into the gear you already own.
- One rotary switch for every function. No menu diving, no learning curve.
- Low battery LED. A red LED lights when it’s time to swap the two AAA cells.
- Safety rated CAT III 600V and CAT II 1000V, tested to IEC 61010, CE marked.
How It Works
Each range turns current into voltage at a fixed ratio. On the DC 0–4A range, 1A out equals 100mV on your meter, so 250mA reads as 25.0mV. On the AC 0–400mA range, the output is 1mV per mA. Set your DMM to a millivolt range, do the maths (or let the scale do it for you), and you’ve got your current reading.
For DC measurements, set the rotary switch, press the zero button with the jaw closed and clear of any conductor, and the offset is nulled. Then clamp your conductor and read.
Accuracy You Can Plan Around
Accuracy is specified at 23°C ±5°C with a crest factor of 3 or less. Some examples from the datasheet:
- DC 0–4A: ±2.0% of reading ±3mA
- DC 0–30A: ±2.0% of reading ±30mA
- AC 0–400mA: ±2.0% of reading ±0.5mA (50/60Hz)
- AC 0–30A: ±2.0% of reading ±30mA (50/60Hz)
Remember the accuracy of your meter or scope adds to the overall measurement uncertainty. The full table is below.
Built for Site Conditions
