Why insulation testing is necessary?

All live conductors of electrical appliances and installations must be insulated to prevent electric shock hazards from inadvertent contact or fire hazards from short circuit and equipment damage. In addition, a low insulation resistance can result in a leakage current which causes a waste of energy that increases the running costs of the installation.

Insulation resistance must be checked by applying a higher voltage than the normal working voltage to ensure there is sufficient insulation.

Periodic testing is also important to ensure that insulation of installations or appliances is not deteriorating. Foreign matter and mechanical factors like wear or breakage may reduce insulation resistance. Regular tests can detect possible fault in insulation.

The Kyoritsu 2056R

The Kyoritsu 2056R is a CAT IV clamp meter with large 40mm jaws. The Kyoritsu 2056R can measure voltage and current in both low and high powered circuits and has the ability to read up to 1000A AC and DC plus 600V AC/DC.

The Kyoritsu 2056R’s wide measurement range makes it suitable for use with power distribution companies, power utilities and maintenance sections.

Kyoritsu 2056R 1000A TRMS Digital AC/DC CAT IV Clamp Meter

The Kyoritsu 2056R is a digital clamp meter is designed to meet international safety standard IEC 61010-1 CAT IV 600V and has the capability to read current up to 1000A AC/DC. The 2056R model features True RMS measurements providing greater accuracy on non-sinusoidal  and distorted waveforms.

The Kyoritsu 2056R also features a data hold function and peak hold function, as well as the ability to measure resistance up to 60MΩ. Temperature can be measured using an additional probe (not supplied) and capacitance can be tested. In addition, a max/min function is available to display the maximum and minimum values during a set period of time.

Furthermore, the tester has a non-contact voltage function, warning the user of AC voltage via a red LED indicator. Ergonomically designed, the Kyoritsu 2056R comprises a double moulded construction and features a bar graph display with backlight, for testing in low light conditions.
